Barev and Welcome
On behalf of Heifer International's Community Volunteer team, I would like to say Barev (hello) and welcome to the blog for our upcoming Study Tour to Armenia. This is a very special opportunity for Heifer International to thank its dedicated Area Volunteer Coordinators by investing in their efforts to share Heifer's work with first-hand experience. While Kate and I lead this all-volunteer trip to Armenia, our colleagues, Chris and Valerie, will be leading a similar trip to Honduras.
Area Volunteer Coordinators are volunteers who serve as Heifer's main go-to in their area for volunteers, congregations, schools, civic organizations, libraries and any other activities requesting a Heifer presence. They are the face of Heifer in their community, and are therefore essential in our efforts. There are over 100 Area Volunteer Coordinators in the United States helping us to support a nation-wide community of Heifer supporters.
Armenia is the perfect place for our journey to take place, as it has been partnered with Heifer International since 1999. Armenia has not had an easy past, losing 1.5 million to a genocide in 1915, over 25,000 in an earthquake in 1988 and even more in a war with neighboring Azerbaijan from 1988-1994. Heifer's mission for Armenia was to give hope and inspiration to the people of Armenia, offering an opportunity to build, create and produce with their own hands. Since 1999, Heifer has been implementing 45 projects in the South Caucasus, assisting 5,327 rural families in Armenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan. There are overall 35 projects covering over 150 communities in rural Armenia. Resources gifted in these projects include cows, goats, sheep, beehives, rabbits, chickens, fish, turkeys, buffalos, bull calves, worms, potato seeds, alfalfa seeds, wheat seeds and fruit tree seedlings. There is also a very intense focus on rural youth leadership development and vocational training.
As we travel in this amazing country, we look forward to sharing our journey with you. Please don't hesitate to comment or ask questions. While we travel as just a small group of Heifer supporters, we do so as representatives of everyone who has made Heifer's work in Armenia possible.
